About Clive

Clive grew up in Dorset, England, and began playing the tuba at the age of eight with the Wessex Youth Band. From the age of ten, he performed as a guest with several professional Army bands in Southern England. At 13, he moved to Scotland and joined the Bon Accord Silver Band in the Championship Section.

After leaving school, Clive studied for his LGSM Brass Teaching Diploma before moving to London to continue his studies at Trinity College of Music. During his studies, he received a bursary from the Royal Philharmonic Society to purchase an instrument, won the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble Competition twice, and was awarded a full scholarship for his postgraduate studies. Whilst in London, Clive performed regularly at major venues and was involved in BBC recordings of world premieres. He also performed for members of the Royal Family on several occasions. Following his studies, he worked as a freelance musician with orchestras across England. One of his highlights was performing with the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden. He also performed internationally with orchestras touring in Germany, Italy, the Seychelles and China.

In 2005, Clive moved to Norway and began working as a conductor within the country's brass and wind band community. He has conducted bands at both local and national level, including three winning performances at Siddis Brass, and has worked with soloists including David Childs and Ian Porthouse.

Since moving to Norway, Clive has been involved in the work of the Norwegian Band Federation (NMF), particularly through its summer courses and conductor development. From 2007 until 2026, he has worked as a leader on NMF summer courses. In 2014, he was invited to join the National Conductors Network, established to encourage the development of new methods and approaches within the Norwegian band movement.

In 2018, Clive became conductor of the NMF's county youth band, Rogaland Ungdomskorps, and still holds this position in 2026.

Teaching has been an important part of Clive's career. Several of his former students have gone on to work as professional musicians. He has previously taught tuba at the University of Stavanger and currently teaches low brass at Vågen VGS in Sandnes and at Stavanger Katedralskole.."
